You have planned your spiritual journey with fervor, prepared each step meticulously… and now your period arrives, sometimes just before your departure, sometimes in the middle of your stay. This situation may seem destabilizing to you, especially if it is your first Umrah. But rest assured: there are solutions, alternatives, and above all no frustration should come to taint your bond with Allah.
In this article, we will help you see things more clearly: what to do when you have your period during Umrah? What practices are permitted? Should you cancel everything? How to prepare? And above all: how to live this period with inner peace, dignity and faith.
1. What is deduced from the 60 questions about menstruation – From Sheikh Muhammad Ibn Salih Al ‘Uthaymeen (may Allah have mercy on him)
The basis of everything is science. And in Islam, Allah does not burden anyone beyond his capacity.(Quran 2:286) When a woman is menstruating or has postpartum periods, certain acts of worship are forbidden to her – not by punishment, but by divine wisdom.
What you can’t do during your period:
- Entering the Sacred Mosque (Masjid al-Haram),
- Doing Tawaf (the 7 towers around the Kaaba),
- Pray (salat),
- Fasting (but this does not apply to Umrah).
💡 Tawaf being a major obligation of Umrah, this means that You will not be able to perform Umrah while you are menstruating. The rest of the rites (sa’i between Safa and Marwa, etc.) can be performed once you are purified.
What you can do during your period:
- Formulate the intention (niyyah) to perform Umrah,
- Recite invocations (dhikr, duas),
- Read the Quran without directly touching the mushaf,
- Attend religious classes, listen to reminders,
- Accompany your group (even without entering the mosque),
- Doing good deeds: giving alms, serving, listening attentively…
👉 Imam Ibn Qudâmah (rahimahou Allah) confirmed that the menstruating woman can formulate his intention of ihram from the designated place (miqat), and remain in a state of ihram until his purification.
2. Concrete scenarios: what to do depending on the time of your period?
➤ If you have your period before departure
Don’t panic: you can retarder ton ihram until you arrive at the miqat. There, you formulate your intention without entering the mosque, and you remain in the state of ihram until you are purified.
⏳ It is important to know the length of your usual cycle. If you think you will be purified on time, don’t cancel your tri pYou will be able to perform your Umrah later in your stay.
➤ If your period starts after ihram but before Umrah
In this case, you have already entered the ritual. You remain in a state of ihram, but you put the rites on hold until you are purified. You will have to avoid the prohibitions of ihram (cutting hair, wearing perfume, having intimate relations, etc.) until you can perform Tawaf.
🧼 As soon as you are purified, take your ghusl (major ablution)and go perform your Umrah. Even if it has to be done out of step with the group.
➤ If you get your period after performing Umrah
Good news: you have already completed all the rites! You can now enjoy your stay in Makkah or Medina in peace, meditate, make supplications, and visit the places, even if you cannot enter the mosques.

4. Can I take medication to delay my period?
Yes, but only after consulting a doctor Some women choose this option to avoid getting their period while traveling, especially if the trip is short. But it depends on your body, your cycle, and your health.
Attention : Hormone treatments can have side effects. Never make this decision alone or at the last minute.
5. Don’t feel guilty, Allah knows your intention
What you are experiencing is not a fault. The Prophet ﷺ himself reassured Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) when she had her period just before making the pilgrimage:
“Do everything that the pilgrim does, except Tawaf until you are purified.”
[Reported by Al-Bukhari and Muslim]
Once purified, Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) was allowed to leave Mecca to a place called Masjid Aisha(at At-Tan‘îm), where she has renewed his intention of ihram to perform a new Umrah. This place is now well known to women who wish to enter ihram again easily.
Your intention, your presence, your desire to worship, your invocations, your tears…All this is accepted and reckoned with Allah.
6. And in Medina, can I visit the mosque?
No, the Prophet’s Mosque (Masjid an-Nabawi) is also forbidden during menstruation. But nothing prevents you:
- to sit nearby to recite invocations,
- to make duas facing the Qibla,
- to visit Quba or Mount Uhud outdoors.
