Umrah is a precious act of worship that combines body, heart, and tongue. Each step of the ritual is accompanied by specific invocations and words, which the pilgrim pronounces with humility and love. In this article, we summarize for you the essential words to say during Umrah, in Arab, with their transliteration and their translation, to help you prepare with complete peace of mind.
1. At the Miqat: Ihram Intention & Talbiyah
When you reach the miqat (the boundary where Umrah begins), and after preparing yourself (ghusl, perfume for men, wearing ihram), you make your intention in your heart, then say out loud:
Allāhumma labbayka ʿumrah
→ O Allah, I respond to Your call to perform Umrah.
If you fear you might not be able to complete your Umrah (due to illness, menstruation, travel interruption…)
You are encouraged to say the precautionary clause (اشتراط), taught by the Prophet ﷺ to Asma bint Umays:
Fa-in ḥabasani ḥābisun fa-maḥillī ḥaythu ḥabastanī
→ If something prevents me (from continuing), then I will exit my state of ihram where I am stopped.
Highly recommended for women if they’re unsure of their menstrual cycle, or for elderly and ill pilgrims.
Then, begin reciting the Talbiyah:
→ Here I am, O Allah, here I am. Here I am, You have no partner. Truly, all praise, grace and dominion belong to You. You have no partner.
Repeat this often as you travel toward Makkah, until you begin your Tawaf.
2. During Tawaf (circling the Kaaba)
You will perform seven rounds around the Kaaba. There is no fixed or obligatory dua to recite during Tawaf — you can say any dhikr or personal supplication, in Arabic or your own language.
Recommended general dhikr:
-
Subḥān Allāh – Glory be to Allah
-
Alḥamdu lillāh – All praise is due to Allah
-
Lā ilāha illa Allāh – There is no god but Allah
-
Allāhu akbar – Allah is the Greatest
Specific dua between the Yemeni Corner and the Black Stone:
Rabbana ātinā fī ad-dunyā ḥasanah, wa fī al-ākhirati ḥasanah, wa qinā ʿadhāb an-nār
→ Our Lord, give us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.
You can also make personal duas for anything you desire.
3. After Tawaf: Praying Behind Maqam Ibrahim
After finishing your seven circuits, you are encouraged to pray two rak‘ahs (units of prayer) behind Maqām Ibrāhīm (if possible).
The Sunnah is to recite:
-
Surah Al-Kafirun (109) in the first rak‘ah
-
Surah Al-Ikhlas (112) in the second rak‘ah
Then you may drink Zamzam water and say:
Allāhumma ajʿalhu lanā ʿilman nāfiʿan wa rizqan wāsiʿan wa shifāʾan min kulli dāʾ
→ O Allah, make it beneficial knowledge, abundant provision, and a cure for all disease.
4. During Sa’i (between Safa and Marwa)
At the foot of Mount Safa, say:
Inna aṣ-Ṣafā wa al-Marwata min shaʿā’iri Allāh
(Surah Al-Baqarah 2:158)
Then climb Safa, face the Qiblah, raise your hands and say this powerful dhikr three times:
Allāhu akbar (x3)… Lā ilāha illa Allāh waḥdahu… anjaza waʿdahu, wa naṣara ʿabdahu, wa hazama al-aḥzāba waḥdah.
Then you can make personal duas. Repeat the same on Mount Marwa.
You will go back and forth 7 times, ending at Marwa.
5. End of Umrah: Cutting or Shaving Hair
To complete your Umrah, exit the state of Ihram by:
-
Men: preferably shaving the entire head, or cutting hair short
-
Women: trimming the length of a fingertip from each braid or section
Say:
Allāhumma taqabbal minnī
→ O Allah, accept this (Umrah) from me.
